Masjid Gedhe is one part of the history of the Sultan's Palace was founded in 1773. As the oldest Masjid built by Sultan Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, this Masjid since the beginning not only functioned as a place of worship. But also as a place to establish a variety of rituals to celebrate the major holidays of Islam, as Prophet Mawlood, 1 Shawwal and Eid al-Adha is marked by Garebeg (read: Grebeg).
Grebeg a ceremony kingdoms in Java which has been held for centuries. The existence of Gedhe Masjid as a place Garebeg not separated from the role of broadcasting Sunan Kalijaga Islam in Java. Until now, the peak of the festive ceremony took place as mountain Garebeg brought from the Palace across the plaza north and ends with the invasion of thousands of people in the Masjid courtyard Gedhe.

Masjid highway only in Indonesia who stood before the 20th century is located in Kampung Kauman, District Gondomanan. Or precisely located to the west of North Square. If we happened to be walking in the square seputaran north, this Masjid would stand out with a roof and REGOL overlap in three of his or her arch-shaped Tinandu Semar.

Masjid Gedhe is a complex of buildings that have various functional parts. Apart from one parent Masjid, Masjid Gedhe pawestren or also have a special place for pilgrims daughter, yakihun or resting space and khotib scholars, pool and veranda Masjid. Now, another part of the complex used as a Masjid Gedhe KUA (Religious Affairs Office), Takmir offices, as well as to save the gamelan Pagongan Sekaten.

With the architectural grandeur, the Masjid is no ordinary Masjid, it seems to be a reference to look directly traces the development of Islam in Java, especially Yogyakarta. Through a variety of routine ceremony was held, we can see the cultural mix that is very sweet between Islam and the traditions of Yogyakarta Kingdom.
